Abstract/Summary:
This thesis examines the role, specific features and prospects of the Russian Federation as a global energy player by examining the development of energy policies. These policies, made evident by Moscow's behaviour in recent years, are mainly based on the diversification of direction of oil and gas pipelines oriented outside the country.;First, the dissertation discovers the idea of exploitation of energy geopolitics, and is supported by practical experiences demonstrated by Russian authorities since the end of the Cold War (more specifically, from 2000 on). Then, the paper is divided into two main parts: determination of Russian foreign policy in terms of oil and gas export diversification strategies, and new transportation projects oriented towards the West (European countries) and the East (Asia-Pacific Region). The last part of the paper analyses potential advantages and disadvantages of Russia's energy and foreign policies, evaluating to what extent Russia is a sustainable, deliberate player in international energy affairs, and provides some recommendations on understanding the role of energy component in the Russian foreign policy.;This issue has a major significance in terms of international relations due to intergovernmental energy interactions involving Moscow (such as new and old trade agreements, formation of strategic formal and informal alliances, debates and disputes) that could seriously affect current economic and geopolitical balance in the world.
