Abstract/Summary:
An investigation into various methods by which mathematical learning and understanding occur. Centered upon qualitative research at the middle school level, this inquiry explores a variety of methods for teaching mathematics while addressing the phenomenon of mathematical anxiety and the levels of confidence and frustration students hold concerning their potential to perform in mathematical situations. Due to our nation's low performance in areas of math and science, this study brings with it vital implications for helping children and adults experience success in the field of mathematics by countering the argument that mathematical thinking is an innate ability held by only a select few individuals. Through a review of current literature surrounding issues of math education and mathematical learning combined with lesson experimentation and student reflections, the findings of this study suggest that, when given appropriate feedback, approaches, and applications, all students have the potential to succeed in mathematics.
