Abstract/Summary:
The need for nutrition education and the understanding of what athletes are consuming in relation to their performance are well established in the literature. Most athletes have no formal nutrition education throughout their playing careers.; The objective of this study was to determine dietary quality of 21 football players who participated in a three-day food recall, questionnaire, and body composition analysis. The results showed that the players were consuming 44.6% of calories from carbohydrates, 17.3% from protein, and 38.1% from fat. Results indicated 50% of the participants responded to eating five or more meals a week from fast food. The results of this research suggest that the players were not meeting the recommended nutrition requirements for athletes, and there is a substantial need for nutrition education for selected athletes.
