Abstract/Summary:
This Organizational Leadership Project (OLP) was conducted using action research methodology to examine employee engagement at Alberta Health Services (AHS) Information Technology (IT) department. The project has answered the following research question: How can AHS IT best motivate employees to enhance their engagement with their work? The project aimed to identify systemic issues related to IT employee engagement by also exploring the following questions: What are the barriers or obstacles to IT employee engagement? Which sustainable leadership strategies enable IT employees to be engaged with their work? Prescribed sustainable engagement strategies are recommended as follows: build leadership capacity at all levels, provide clarity when communicating organizational goals and work outcomes, adopt and implement a learning strategy based on employee input and performance measurement, adopt a way of doing business that fosters a culture of creativity, and adopt creative tension as a means to produce more innovative outcomes.
