Abstract/Summary:
This Master's Degree Project combines Historical and Contextual Analysis of the CPR Lands situated between 9th and 10th Avenues South in Calgary's downtown core as a case study in the broader issue of how to approach and design towards mitigating the deleterious edge condition under-used railway corridors form in many urban centers across the West. A series of Design Principles are then identified and elaborated on as the theoretical bases upon which successful interventions into this issue should be grounded in order to mitigate the variety of maladies illuminated through the Analysis. These Design Principles include the Confucian Principle of Zhongyong, the Winter City Principles, the concept of Gateways, and the beneficial urban qualities of Permeability, Legibility, Variety and Continuity. Finally, the Analysis and Design Principles are applied in a Design Intervention that is situated on the CPR Lands between 4th and 8 th Streets SW.
