Abstract/Summary:
Using real data of wind speeds, consumers' load demand and conventional units for the existing Puerto Rico electric power system a method was developed to calculate wind power capacity value. We conducted this investigation with the purposes of investigate which of the proposed sites offer the best wind speeds conditions; which of the proposed wind turbine models better fits the wind speed patterns; and calculate the effective capacity of wind energy. In the study three levels of wind installed capacity and three possible scenarios were used. We found that Aguadilla is better than Ceiba to establish a wind farm since was in Aguadilla that we found higher capacity values for wind power. Also, the Zond Z-46 wind turbine is superior to Vestas V-39 wind turbine in terms of power contribution. Finally, we document this procedure in order to have it available to others when evaluating different sites and wind turbines.
