The aim of this research was to provide a theoretical verification and evaluation of New Urbanism design attributes. Through analysis of New Urbanism design attributes the ten most prevalent included the following: density, front porches, green open space, grid system, hidden garages/back alleys, identifiable core, mandatory design codes, mixed housing types, pedestrian scale, and transit orientation. The purpose of this study was to provide a theoretical basis for these design attributes to more completely understand why they are deemed successful elements of New Urbanism communities. A further understanding evolved as to how these attributes contributed to the creation of community and their resultant effect on planning and design.;The assessment of the research found that the ten design attributes of New Urbanism communities are theoretically justifiable elements in forming the foundation of community planning. History further proves the importance of these design attributes through their recurrence. Theoretically, there is a deeper, underlying justification for these attributes, be it aesthetic, cultural, experiential, perceptual or social.
