Abstract/Summary:
This single-subject design investigated treatment using an alternative communication device (ACD) and American Sign Language (ASL) on the communicative effectiveness of an individual with a progressive language disorder and apraxia of speech (AOS). Semantic concepts of agent, action, object and WH concepts were elicited using the ACD and ASL. Communicative effectiveness was analyzed by using Nicholas and Brookshire's (1996) protocol for scoring content informational units (CIUs) for number of words, number of CIUs, and percent correct CIUs. Results revealed increases for numbers of words, numbers of CIUs and percent of correct CIUs produced for the ACD and ASL. Greater increases were revealed for ASL across tasks. ASL was determined by the participant to be the most preferred mode of communication.
