Abstract/Summary:
Statistical data support the observation that pianists are increasingly seeking medical treatment for injuries sustained while engaging in musical activity. An overview of Performing Arts Medicine as a medical specialty is offered. The causes, symptoms, and known pathology of overuse are discussed and risk factors contributing to the development of overuse are explored. Playing the piano predisposes the body to injury at certain ergonomic stress points. Probable sites of overuse in keyboardists are identified, and the etiology of common injuries and syndromes is outlined.;Recovering from an overuse injury or syndrome is a long-term process. Prevention of these injuries is the most productive course of action. Teacher awareness of how injuries occur and what physiological processes are involved is vital in preventing or circumventing injury. General preventive advice is presented concerning warm-ups, cool-downs, and practice. Piano technique which is free from harmful tension is an essential component in injury prevention. Specific considerations in developing effective, pain-free technique are discussed. A resource listing of Performing Arts Medicine centers and an extensive bibliography are included.
