Abstract/Summary:
The influence of Friedrich Nietzsche can be seen in virtually all areas of twentieth century thought, from Freudian psychology, to existentialism postmodernism and beyond. In the field of history, his influence is most seen in the questioning of accepted practices of nineteenth century historiography. However, the majority of Nietzsche's prescriptions for history have yet to be put into practice by most historians. Concerned with the effects of pursuing history for its own sake, Nietzsche sought to create a of history that "serves life." This study conducts an overview of Nietzsche's contributions to the field of history, including On the Uses and Disadvantages History for Life, the influence of Heraclitus, and eternal return. Unlike "scientific" history that characterizes both our own time and his, Nietzsche's unique vision for historiography seems to be primarily an aesthetic one.
