Abstract/Summary:
The topic for this essay is Bonsai as an art form. The research plan included researching the history of Bonsai, its relationship to oriental gardening, the elements of design in Bonsai, Bonsai styles, the techniques used in creating Bonsai, the container and its importance in Bonsai, proper Bonsai soil, fertilizer, water, and the protection from the elements, and the author's personal experience in creating Bonsai. The procedures and methods employed include library research, research at local garden clubs and horticultural centers, and hands-on creation of Bonsai. The result of this research is an essay describing the history of Bonsai, its relationship to the elements of artistic design, and a concentration on Bonsai styles and techniques. The essay concludes with sketches and photographs of the author's own work in Bonsai and text describing how the examples relate to the elements of design, Bonsai styles, and techniques.
