Abstract/Summary:
A close examination of the extraordinary life of Alberta Henry, a twentieth-century African American woman who left Kansas for Salt Lake City, reveals her determination to strengthen equality for Utah's minority population, and illuminates the hardships blacks encountered in the highly white, religious state. This work considers how Henry challenged race, class, and gender through her involvements in the Baptist church, public education, and the NAACP.
