Abstract/Summary:
Ethnic nationalism altered the perceived history of Yugoslavia, effectively widening the split between Serbs and Croats to a nearly irreconcilable state, and was the main cause of Yugoslavia's collapse. This thesis discusses the role of ethnic nationalism in twentieth century Yugoslavia. It identifies nationalism's effect on altering the written history of both the Croats and Serbs. The author shows the varying historical beliefs of the two ethnic groups, from the turn of the century, until Yugoslavia's break up. This thesis details major historic and religious events that altered the perspectives of each group. In addition, the author also emphasizes the nationalists' role in the manipulation of the media, and its subsequent effect on widening the divide between the two groups. This paper also discusses the intense media campaigns in recent years as well as the western media's role in the region.
