Abstract/Summary:
Vic Meyers was a legend in Washington State politics. The leader of a dance orchestra who was also the second highest elected official in the state. After a comic beginning, his political career was furthered because of the relative obscurity of the office he sought combined with the fact that his campaign coincided with the Democratic landslide of 1932. Once in office he proved himself a diligent official who did not hesitate to step out of the usual role of his office and seek to promote his own public agenda. Later events which occurred as a result of this desire coupled with his previous comic reputation led to him being considered an ineffectual, if lovable, buffoon. This study demonstrates that he was in reality a dedicated and knowledgeable public servant genuinely concerned with the well-being of people who were suffering during a major depression.
