Abstract/Summary:
Resistance training is an integral part of training for competitive swimming. However, it is not certain that resistance training provides beneficial adaptations over and above those achieved by swimming alone. Additionally, the response of muscle protein metabolism in trained females to resistance and endurance exercise is unknown. The purpose of this study was to quantify the acute effects of combined swim and resistance exercise on muscle protein metabolism and hormonal responses in female swimmers by the direct measurement of protein synthesis.;Seven collegiate female swimmers were studied to determine if muscle protein synthesis and whole body protein degradation were increased by the combination of swimming and resistance exercise beyond that achieved during swimming alone. A primed constant infusion of ring-...
