Abstract/Summary:
Originally designed to reduce false identification rates in children, researchers have started to examine elimination lineups with respect to adult eyewitnesses. Research has suggested that a fast elimination lineup with modified instructions is the most successful in producing correct identifications and reducing false-positives in children. The current study aimed to replicate recent research, investigating whether the same effect is present in adults. The current study was extended to examine the effect of the fast elimination lineup with modified instructions on adults and on same and other race identifications. Although the results do not indicate the expected effects and interactions of lineup style, the own-race bias was present in the current study, as predicted. Furthermore, the modified instructions were successful at decreasing false identifications in target absent lineups. Results are discussed in terms of correct and incorrect decisions; the influence of modified instructions and target ethnicity on choosing rates in target present and target absent lineups is also discussed.
