Historically, urban riparian areas have presented challenges to those entrusted with river valley management. Ecological and social benefits are being demanded of riparian areas more than ever, however, these opportunities are frequently missed because unsustainable riparian management approaches are used. Ecosystem management has typically been viewed for a wildland ecology setting but could have benefits when applied to an urban context. Urban environmental planners and managers are in need of a framework that provides a better approach to river valley management.
