Abstract/Summary:
The design, development and testing of the braking system of a hybrid electric vehicle for the 1993 Ford/SAE/DOE competition are described. The main objective was to design a system that would provide safe and reliable braking for the vehicle. This was accomplished by modifying a braking system from a 1993 Geo Metro as well as by adding an ABS unit. Regenerative braking effects are discussed. The system requirements are presented and motivation is established for system modifications. The system provided safe and reliable braking and was recognized by the competition organizers as the Most Innovative Design in Mechanical Systems.
