Abstract/Summary:
This thesis focuses on the formation of Taiwanese identity under the influence of Japanese colonial education. Since identity is relationally constructed (shifts historically depending on the changing social context and situation), cultural identity usually becomes stronger when a group faces an outside threat. In this thesis, I will show how the Japanese occupation affected Taiwanese self-identity, and how the colonial education changed the stratification of the Taiwan's society, and shaped the thought of Taiwan's educated elite.
