Abstract/Summary:
Art and Commerce: The Transition of Fashion Photography into the Fine Art Market demonstrates evidence of how fashion photography has been accepted as fine art and assesses the drivers for this industry change. To begin this evaluation, the distinctions between fashion and art photography are discussed to discover when a fashion photograph can be considered art. A study of its foundations in the publishing industry provides background to the process of creating fashion photographs. Evidence of the transition of fashion photography to fine art is found in its growing market of collectors and support from museums and literature. Fashion photographs have realized extraordinary prices at auction and have been featured in exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums in the context of fine art. Scholarly literature examines fashion photography from an art historical perspective. In addition, technology is constantly recontextualizing the dynamic genre's presentation and consumption. A mutually beneficial relationship between fashion photography and the art world is the essential motivation for these exchanges.
