Abstract/Summary:
The growing trend of immigration in Canada increases the need for counsellors to become more adept in providing services related to factors of immigration and acculturation. In an attempt to provide counsellors with a better understanding of acculturation, I examined the relationship between acculturating persons' process of identity integration and their personality type. I used online survey results of 60 participants over the age of 19 who have immigrated to or are temporary residents of Canada. This thesis is organized into 2 manuscripts that address the question, "What is the relationship between the acculturative identity integration of Canadian immigrants or temporary residents of Canada and their Jungian personality preferences?" In the first manuscript, Brussels Sprouts or Durian: Examining Personality Type and Identity Integration, I describe the findings of my research and their implications for acculturation theory. Specifically, I propose that the integration stage of the Cognitive Developmental Model of Social Identity Integration significantly correlated with the intuition function of Jungian personality theory, and I address the possibility that acculturation theory may not be capturing the experiences of the entire acculturating population. In the second manuscript, Working with Identity: The Perceiving Functions and Cultural Adaptation, I suggest how counsellors and other mental health practitioners could use the study findings to better provide therapeutic support to clients who may be struggling with the process of acculturation.
