Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the competencies of the Sports Information/Public Relations Director, Marketing/Promotions Director, and the Business Manager on the following sports industry levels: professional sports; collegiate sports; and commercial fitness sports. More specifically, the purpose was to formulate competency inventory models that would be representative of these selected positions within the Sports Management area.;Within the limitations and conditions of the present investigation and the discriminating value of the Sports Management Personnel Competency Inventory Questionnaire, the following conclusions seem justified: (1) The demographic data responses formulated job-model profiles, job-position profiles, and sports industry level model profiles. (2) The Sports Management Personnel Competency Inventory Questionnaire was able to predict and formulate job-models, job-position models, and sports industry level models. (3) There was no significant difference between the seven job-models in one of the twenty-one discriminant comparisons (P-BUSN vs. C-BUSN); the remaining twenty discriminant comparisons showed statistically significant differences in rejecting the null hypotheses. (4) The null hypothesis stating that there would be no significant difference between the job-position models was rejected. (5) The null hypothesis stating that there would be no significant difference between the sports industry level models was rejected. (6) Theoretical job-model profiles for each of the seven selected Sports Management positions were proposed.;A Sports Management Personnel Competency Inventory Questionnaire was designed in order to solicit demographic, competencies, and trait data from 500 Sports Management professionals. Two hundred and twenty-two (222) responses were collected, tabulated, coded, and analyzed. Specific emphases were placed: (1) on the utilization of demographic factors for the purpose of developing appropriate model-profiles; (2) on the development of competency inventory job-models, job-position models, and sports industry level models; (3) on the assimilation of personal trait response model profiles; (4) on the comparisons of competency inventories between job-models, job-position models, and sports industry level models; and (5) on the proposed model-profile for each of the seven selected job-models.
