| Since the inscription of the Changsha kiln Tongguan ceramic firing technique on the national intangible cultural heritage list, the community has paid increasing attention to this traditional technique, and various efforts have been devoted to its preservation and development. However, most of the efforts have focused on the development of the local cultural and tourism industry, and there is still a lack of attention and research on the residents of the Changsha kiln ceramic community. The local residents are in a passive position and their identity as community owners is ignored, and the primary role of "people" in the conservation and development of Changsha kilns is not reflected. At the same time, local residents do not have a deep understanding of the cultural value of Changsha kilns, and many ceramic craftsmen still adopt the old paradigm, making the products fall into homogenization and loss of local characteristics.Participatory design is a design approach that brings together multiple stakeholders to collaborate on a common goal based on democratic decision-making principles. This approach is based on the development model of community assets, affirming the ability and value of the residents in the community, and using the existing resources of the community to carry out activities. This project hopes to intervene in the Changsha kiln ceramic community with participatory design,to explore solutions to enhance the creative abilities of community residents, and to generalize the design approach. This thesis aims to achieve the improvement of the creative ability of craftsmen within the local ceramic community through the practical activities of participatory design workshops for the Changshaoyao ceramic community, and to provide some reference for the research of community creative capacity building.Based on the anthropological fieldwork, field research and resident interviews of the Changsha kiln ceramic community,we fully understand the Changsha kiln ceramic community and discover the existing problems of the Changsha kiln ceramic community.By analyzing the literature on participatory design and creative capacity building at home and abroad and summarizing relevant case studies, the design process of the participatory design workshop for the Changshaoyao ceramic community was determined and a set of appropriate design tools was developed.Through the two-day workshop and the collaborative design of the participants,we enhanced the community residents’ sense of identification with the cultural values of Changsha kilns;emphasized the ownership of the community residents in the form of "participation",increased their enthusiasm to participate in the community development, and promoted their conscious behavior to protect the local culture;enhanced the participants’ creative ability and collaboration through the design process. This study proposes a design process for the Changsha kiln ceramics. This thesis proposes a design process for a participatory design workshop for the Changsha kiln ceramic community, with a four-stage process of design concept communication,pre-design,design generation, and design evaluation to empower local ceramic craftsmen and promote the development of their creative abilities;create a series of design tools to help participants understand the content, inspire thinking, and promote expression in the design practice of the workshop;and use this design practice as a basis to summarize the participatory design process. The workshop will be used as a basis to summarize the challenges and reflections in participatory design practice. |
