Ruins Route Study On Wuchang Ancient City Wall

The ancient city with walls of China has a very long history and a large number,of which Wuchang has a history of over 1700 years.Since the founding of Xiakou city by the great emperor of the Sunquan,it has experienced four expansions,and reached the largest scale of nine gates in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.In the course of its change,it not only covers the traditional urban construction thought of ancient China,but also lays the foundation stone for the future development of Wuchang.The unique urban space formed by the city walls and nine gates shaped the urban landscape in a specific period.However,after the demolition of the city wall in 1927,Wuhan has experienced several urban expansion,most of which lack of research on the space of the city wall and respect for the historical landscape.Ignoring the heritage of traditional culture,many valuable historical marks of the city wall have been destroyed.In 1909,Wuchang was in the end of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.At that time,the city wall contained nine gates,reaching the largest scale after the third expansion in the Tang and Song dynasties.The Snake Mountain traversed the whole Wuchang City and divided it into the South City and the north city.The whole city is magnificent.The study of Wuchang City Wall in this period can make future urban planners more aware of the historical changes of the city wall area.Based on such special background,the author has read a large number of documents and materials,studied the historical map of Wuchang city development,conducted field investigation according to the historical information,and analyzed the specific location of each different section of the city wall site route,aiming at finding the site route of the city wall as accurately as possible,providing first-hand data for the related research of the city wall.This paper is mainly based on "the first year of Xuantong in 1909-detailed drawing of inside and outside Hubei Province" and "1883(Tongzhi)general drawing of streets inside and outside Hubei Province".With the methods of historical data,fieldresearch and some surveying and mapping,it studies the route of the city wall site completely and systematically,grasps the precise positioning of the city wall area on the macro level,and expounds the urban development and changes of the city wall and its surrounding areas on the micro level.This paper introduces the concept of "urban historical imprint",generalizes the tangible or intangible sites,and defines different types of sites and their roles in the future urban development and renewal.
