Hazard detection is defined as the ability to identify potentially dangerous traffic situations. Many factors can affect the driver’s hazard detection, but the most overlooked factor is emotion, especially for young drivers.Previous studies mainly focused on the influence of emotion on driver distraction and did not distinguish the types of hazard. This study explores the influence of emotion and hazard types on young drivers’ hazard detection.Pre-experiment: Based on previous literature research, two video clips were collected and screened, and tested for their validity in emotion induction. The experiment was a 2(Movie type)× 2(Moment)mixed experiment design, the between-subject variable was the movie type, including two levels: negative and neutral, the within-subject variable was the Moment, including two levels: Before induction and After induction. The dependent variable is the average score of the subjective report.A total of 28 young drivers(15 in negative movies and 13 in neutral movies)participated in the experiment, and the subjects were 18-25 years old.It was found that the two videos can induce the negative and neutral emotions of young drivers.Emotion induction needs to consider the duration of the induction.Study 1: The technology of the Response time technique and Event-Related Potential(ERP)were used to investigate the effect of emotion and with a hazard or not on hazard detection.A two-way mixed design analysis of variance comparing hazard types(with hazard vs.without hazard)×emotion state(negative emotion vs.neutral emotion)was performed to analyze changes in young drivers’ hazard detection. The between-subject variable was the emotional state, including two levels: negative emotion and neutral emotion, the within-subject variable was the hazard types, including two levels: with hazard and without hazard. The dependent variables were the accuracy and the reaction time of the behavioral response, and the amplitude of ERP components N1 and P200.A total of 40 young drivers subjects(average age 18-25 years)were enrolled in this study. It is found that negative emotions will increase the reaction time of young drivers and reduce the recognition accuracy. The N1 and P200 amplitude of situation with hazard was greater than that of without hazard.Study 2: The technology of the Response time technique and Event-Related Potential(ERP)were used to investigate the effect of emotion and overt hazards and covert hazards.A two-way mixed design analysis of variance comparing hazard types(overt hazards vs.covert hazards)×emotion state(negative emotion vs.neutral emotion)was performed to analyze changes in young drivers’ hazard detection. The between-subject variable was the emotional state, including two levels: negative emotion and neutral emotion, the within-subject variable was the hazard types, including two levels: overt hazards and covert hazards. The dependent variables were the accuracy and the reaction time of the behavioral response, and the amplitude of ERP components N1 and P200.A total of 40 young drivers subjects(average age 18-25 years)were enrolled in this study. It is found that the N1 and P200 amplitude of young drivers with negative emotion was smaller than that of neutral emotion, the N1 and P200 amplitude of situation with overt hazard was greater than that of covert hazard.Young drivers with negative emotion are less accurate in identifying hazards under the condition of the covert hazard. Conclusions: The emotions of young drivers induced by negative and relaxing movies using as an effective tool. The experiment shows negative emotions are not conducive to danger recognition of young drivers than neutral emotions, and it is more difficult for young drivers to identify the covert hazard.
