Hazard perception refers to the driver’s ability to recognize potential hazards on the road and make appropriate responses.A large number of studies have found that hazard perception ability is a key factor affecting the collision hazard of young drivers. However, some young drivers tend to overestimate their hazard perception ability, and their self-rated hazard perception ability can not accurately reflect their performance on the hazard perception test.Overconfidence is an important factor. In addition, previous studies on the relationship between self-assessment scores of drivers’ hazard perception ability and hazard perception test performance are inconsistent, and lack the role of overconfidence in different specific stages of hazard perception. In order to solve the above problems, the following two studies were carried out:In study 1,86 drivers were selected to investigate the influence of overconfidence on the hazard perception identification stage of young drivers by comparing their scores on the self-assessment scale of risk perception ability and their performance on the risk perception test. This study used a series of real traffic videos taken from the driver’s point of view to test30 candidates(learners after taking subject 3 of the driving test),28 novice drivers and 28 experienced drivers. In the experiment, the subjects were asked to simulate that they would quickly click the left mouse button to recognize and respond to traffic factors affecting road safety in the process of driving. The data collected and calculated included reaction time, response accuracy, related eye movement indexes and self-assessment scale scores. In study 2,three groups of subjects, including 25 candidates,28 novice drivers and 28 experienced drivers, were compared and analyzed. The influence of overconfidence on hazard perception ability in the hazard perception assessment stage was analyzed.Specifically, the participants rated the possibility and severity of accidents, the hazard level of hazard sources and the confidence level of their own answers in a dangerous situation. To further investigate the influence of different parts of overconfidence on hazard perception assessment.Based on the above two studies, this study draw the following conclusions:(1)The higher the score of the candidate’s driving ability scale, the higher the degree of overconfidence and the worse the performance in the test.(2)In the stage of hazard perception identification, candidates have obvious driving experience effect on the reaction time and eye movement index of covert hazard.(3)The effects of overconfidence on their scores of crash severity depended on hazard type.
