| The ancient town of Gaosha,located in Gaosha Town,Dongkou County,Shaoyang City,Hunan Province,sits on the Liaoshui alluvial plain at the foot of Xuefeng Mountains,which had citizens lived there early in the Neolithic Age.Streets were built there in Qin and Han Dynasty;it became a city in Tang and Song Dynasty,and achieved its heyday in Ming and Qing Dynasty.So far,it has a history of 2196 years.Now,the ancient Gaosha town,known as the south gate of Dongkou County as well as a kind of scarce old town resource,amid the hot wave of developing old-town tourism,is facing grave challenges in carrying forward historical and cultural lifelines,boosting culture,protecting the fragile ecological environment,upgrading infrastructure and striking a proper balance between seeking conservation of the town and improving local people’s livelihood.All of these make a systematic protective planning and study significant.This paper,given Gaosha’s development situation,sets out to analyse its existing plannings based on the status quo research,interviews and visits and materials collected.Also,based on this in-depth study,this paper will first systematically collect and analyse the history,conservation situation and overall planning of the Gaosha old town.Then,by studying updated cases of protecting old towns inside and outside the country,this paper will explore principles about organic updating and systematic protection and development to which Gaosha town should be committed in its protective planning.Third,given the current situation in Gaosha town,this paper will put forward a protective planning pattern over the ecological conservation,encapsulating original culture and the re-emergence of old memory;finally,through the case of Gaosha town,this paper will analyse challenges facing the conservation and development of historical old towns,and put forth practical solutions in hope of providing experience for the protective planning of old historical and cultural towns inside the country. |
