A Study On Chengji Town Of Jianli County In Hubei

This paper comes from the cooperative project studied by Wuhan University of Technology and Kanagawa University of Japan: "China-Japan's Cooperative Study of the Streets of Ancient Town in Hubei Province" and "The Study of Protection Using mode and Method of Acient Town in Hubei " published by Wuhan University of Technology, in the same breath this case study is a part of the project "The Study of Traditional folk house in Hubei" of the Construction Department of Hubei province. Taking street and architecture as carriers, the paper explores the values of the history, culture, politics and economy in Chengji ancient town. Moreover, I analyze space configuration of ancient town and architecture regional features. Finally, concerning status in quo in ancient town, the conceiving outline of conservation and utilization has been put forward in order to promote sustainable development of Chengji town.There are seven chapters in this paper. Exordium is in the first chapter. From chapter 2 to chapter 6, the main content has been discussed, which includes the forming, developing, and evolution process of Chengji town in Jianli county, space configuration of ancient town, street space, and architecture's styles and features. In the last chapter, conclusions and prospect has been put forth.In chapter 1, we introduce the purpose, significance, object, synopsis, methods, outline of the study as well as status in quo and the trends of the ancient streets and towns.In chapter 2, the historical evolution process of Chengji booming from bazaar has been revealed. Based on it, we identify the developing stages of ancient town, analyze various factors influencing its formation and evolution, and also emphasize the key factor of bazaar in the formation process of the architectures.In chapter 3, we investigate the natural, economic and cultural environment of the town, the construction fashion and the arrangement of streets, then argue that the district to the river which heavily influence the commercial development.In chapter 4, we discuss the features of streets. Through analyzing the function and the size of the interface of street one by one, we illuminate that such structures are adaptive for residence.In chapter 5, according to the function and space layout of the architectures in Chengji, we classify all the buildings (mainly the residential houses) by their characterization. Further more, we stress on the effect of climate and commercial development on the ancient architectures. Especially, we attach our attention to some regional features' effects of Hubei province, such as Tianjing and Tiandou.In chapter 6, we propose some conceiving thoughts for the conservation and utilization for Chengji. Investigation questionnaire has been adopted to analyze the status in quo questions and difficulties, and then concrete ideas and measures have been brought forth.In chapter 7, we draw a conclusion on our study and prospect the future of Chengji town. Finally, we provide some thoughts and hints for future research on Chengji.
