If the spatial transformation of Chongqing is a typical sample of inland city modernization, then Jiangbei City at the micro level——many specific features of early modern spatial transformation in China, such as the relationship between spatial form and infrastructure, the organization of streets and markets, and the basic appearance presented by the functional changes of ordinary plots——reflects the transformation process of how a geographically well-equipped town emerged from water and flourished from commerce. The diversity and complexity of cities leave limited historical remains, and the changes at the micro level are not significant,so more specific and accurate historical materials are needed to support them.Accurately mapped historical maps have good research potential,as they can not only objectively reflect the physical space of the city, but also reflect the social consciousness of the mapper.Taking the map as the main body, combined with text and photos to assist in correcting, analyzing and emphasizing important morphological elements, will collage the overall appearance of the city.Looking at historical maps related to Chongqing,it can be found that whether it is a public opinion map or a modern map,Chongqing City and Jiangbei City are both prominent parts of the map in terms of exhaustiveness and expressiveness. Therefore, taking the equally important but under-appreciated Jiangbei City as the object of study, this paper discusses the transformation of spatial forms and social relations, and finally reveals its characteristics in comparison. The whole paper consists of six chapters. The main four chapters analyze the spatial morphology of Jiangbei City from two perspectives: physical space(spatial pattern and spatial reality)and spiritual space(spatial imagery),and finally discuss the influential mechanisms and motives behind the spatial changes(spatial perspective).First,Chapter 2 attempts to establish a research framework based on historical map translation and urban morphological analysis methods.By locating historical information on modern vector topographic maps,a set of city maps can be transcribed. In this way,a spatial database of urban historical information can be established. Then, chapter 3 and chapter 4 are based on the database,in which various elements in the city map are extracted according to three dimensions(transportation, function and industry),and the general trends of spatial patterns in the three periods are analyzed with the literature.Chapter 5 will focus on the understanding and imagery changes of spatial forms by multiple subjects, while restoring the real and sensual urban life.At this point, the overall picture of spatial forms is fully revealed. The final chapter will summarize the changing characteristics of the study area, integrate the social practice process, explain the characteristics and trends summarized in the previous section, discuss how urban space gradually transforms in the social process, and summarize the urban evolutionary development mechanism from traditional to modern.
