The the old town fringe(OTF)is a mezzanine zone between the old town and other functional groups during the rapid urbanization. With the urbanization process, the city has changed from a single center system to a multi-center system, and the fringe area located outside the old town has also ushered in the opportunity to change from the fringe to the urban center. The OTF is constantly changing and becoming an important area in the urban spatial system. As its spatial change also brings complex changes in travel behavior, from the perspective of travel behavior, identifying the OTF and grasping its spatial evolution law have important theoretical and practical significance for effectively promoting the renewal of our old town.In this study,Nanjing, which has a long history, was selected as the case study object.Detailed analysis was carried out according to the following three levels of research technology routes: the evolution law of new and old transformation in the urban fringe area, the method of identifying the OTF,and dynamic characteristics of changes in the marginal zone during the transition. The article first studies the transformation and evolution of new and old urban fringe areas.Taking history as the context, study explore the evolution of urban fringe areas in the course of urban development from two aspects: spatial structure and transportation mode. The study found that the development of Nanjing’s urban fringe areas has generally gone through the process of "undeveloped-sporadic construction-accelerated evolution-slow development-transformation and ablation",and thus built a five-stage spatial structure of urban fringe development and evolution model.Based on the perspective of travel, this study proposes a spatial recognition method for the OTF through the fusion of household travel data and urban electronic map points of interestdata(POI).Taking the travel survey data and POI data of Nanjing in 2010 and 2015 as examples, the study successfully identified the OTF of Nanjing in 2010 and 2015,further confirming the feasibility of the method. Finally,we study the physical space(such as spatial distribution, convenience, land use, etc.)and travel behavior(such as travel choice, travel time consumption, travel OD distribution, etc.)at the edge of Nanjing’s old city during the urban transformation period and carried out a more detailed study of dynamic characteristics. At the physical space level, the OTF of Nanjing shows a distribution trend of plaques and slivers, and the land is complex and the direction of evolution is multi-polar.At the level of travel behavior, the vitality of people traveling in the OTF is low,the choice of travel mode is dominated by economic factors, and there is a greater demand for travel across the fringe. These findings indicate that the complex dynamic characteristics of the OTF require more in-depth research on the impact mechanism, and its healthy and sustainable development is inseparable from continuous tracking research and dynamic planning guidance. The study proposes strategies and suggestions for the future development direction based on the current dynamic trends in the OTF of Nanjing.
