In the field of industrial design,one of the basic elements of product modeling and design activities is the law of formal beauty.The law of formal beauty includes basic design elements such as symmetry and balance,contrast and harmony,rhythm and rhythm,proportion and scale.Among them,as a technique often used in design,symmetry can be used to ensure the balance of the composition and present a unique aesthetic charm.This study selects the morphological characteristics guided by the symmetry principle as the research object,and studies the symmetrical visual cognitive characteristics as the basis of the design.Aesthetic ability refers to the ability of people to feel,appreciate,evaluate and create beauty,and is a high-level function unique to humans.Evidence shows that artists are not based on knowledge,but based on intuition,unconsciously imitating the operating mechanism of the visual nervous system for artistic creation.People’s brains have an innate preference for symmetry,and symmetry is also regarded as one of the laws of formal beauty.So,what is the symmetrical aesthetic processing and cognitive mechanism?This paper intends to investigate the above problems through two studies.The research uses abstract geometric figures as experimental materials to explore the aesthetic cognitive mechanism of symmetry from the perspectives of behavioral and cognitive neurology,including three experiments.First,from a behavioral perspective,use the Implicit Association Test(IAT)to explore the implicit attitude of symmetry;second,use the Breaking Continuous Flash Suppression(b-CFS)to explore the unconsciousness of symmetry Processing;Finally,from the perspective of brain electrophysiological mechanisms,use the Picture-Word Interference Paradigm(PWI)to explore the symmetrical cognitive mechanism based on ERPs.Three experimental results show that:(1)Symmetrical aesthetic responses involve positive emotions,and these emotional responses are derived from the processing simplicity of symmetrical perception,which is consistent with the aesthetic pleasure processing fluency theory.(2)Symmetrical patterns can also be represented under unconscious conditions,which is consistent with aesthetic intuition theory.(3)Research on event-related potentials ERPs shows that symmetry can be automatically detected by the brain.The aesthetic evaluation of symmetrical patterns is an unconscious and spontaneous process,.In short,this research explores the aesthetic processing and cognitive mechanism of symmetry.The research results are theoretically helpful to understand the cognitive processing principles of the law of formal beauty,supplement research in this field,it has important theoretical significance.In practical application,it provides a feasible design concept for product design,icon design,interface design,web page and other related design fields.
