Since the 1990s,China has entered a rapid urbanization process, which has promoted steady economic growth, but also brought about urban problems such as urban sprawl, environmental pollution and energy waste, which have had a negative impact on the lives and health of residents. As a sustainable development-oriented urban development strategy, the compact city theory advocates high residential density, mixed land use patterns, adjacent and complete public transportation systems, and urban forms that encourage cycling and walking. It has become a hot topic of discussion among urban researchers in many countries. Therefore,an in-depth study of the relationship between the urban spatial form and the healthy environment is the key to effectively solving the existing problems in the city. This article aims to explore in depth the interaction mechanism between walking activities and urban forms, promote the practice of compact city concepts and the promotion of design methods, increase citizens’ willingness to walk, and build a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood environment and a sustainable urban form.First of all, this article combs the theory and practice of compact cities and urban morphology at home and abroad, from a compact perspective, summarizes the morphological characteristics of urban blocks into three dimensions: intensiveness, efficiency, and place. At the same time,it summarized the quantitative measurement methods of urban block morphology used in previous studies, and further constructed the urban morphology indicator system. On the other hand,by demonstrating that slow-moving activities are beneficial to reduce residents’ obesity caused by poor living habits such as sedentary, the incidence of chronic diseases such as three highs, and the sorting out of the research progress on walking environment and walking behaviors. Finally, walking activities are used as indicators to reflect the health of citizens.Secondly, this article takes three typical urban areas in Suzhou as the research object, and obtains the walking activity data of urban block residents on weekdays and rest days based on the observation point counting method;constructs block morphological factor evaluation model based on GIS and Space syntax platform.Use grid sampling to divide the research effective area, establish the geographic spatial correspondence between the independent variable block shape quantitative indicators and the dependent variable walking activity data. Then, through the multiple linear regression model of SPSS software, the correlation between urban block morphology and walking activities under the compact perspective is analyzed. Finally, based on the results of regression analysis, seven significant correlation indicators were selected: building density, subway station accessibility, global selectivity, pedestrian selectivity, functional diversity, completeness of transportation facilities, and open space accessibility. In view of the seven indicators,an in-depth analysis of the block morphology of the research sample was carried out,The factors influencing the pedestrian activities are put forward as follows: the number of bus stops or bike sharing rental stops around the subway is unreasonable; The urban environment and the road network in some areas are not suitable for walking;Lack of traffic safety facilities in urban branch roads; The quantity and scale of open space in different areas are quite different, and the quality of internal space and facilities are insufficiently maintained and updated.Based on these research conclusions, this paper proposes that future urban design can consider assessing and grading the building density of different blocks to design the pedestrian space morphology in a targeted manner;constructing "human-scale" small blocks and suitable urban road networks for walking, and sound walking Traffic safety facilities to improve the safety and unobstructed walkability of the block;enrich and improve the functional ratio of the block,Arrange the scale and quantity of open space reasonably to improve the quality of space and public facilitiese, and increase the attractiveness of recreational walking activities for citizens.
