In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, gardens located in the south of the Yangtze River played an important role in the history of China.Bridge is a very important and common architectural form in Chinese classical garden. This paper intends to analyze the significance of Bridges in gardens through the related principles of Gestalt psychology. The Humble Administrator’s Garden is a representative of gardens in the south of the Yangtze River during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, among which the Small Flying Rainbow is a rare covered bridge among the existing gardens. The Small Flying Rainbow to be located in the middle of the Humble Administrator’s Garden on a large area of water, surrounded by buildings, wealth of scenery, can bring people a rich landscape experience.Firstly, this paper attempts to analyze the observation characteristics of visual perception for the physical world in the two-dimensional plane by sorting out the related theories of visual field in Gestalt psychology.Since a large part of people’s perception of three-dimensional space comes from the accumulation of the past experience, the visual perception rules summarized in the twodimensional surface are introduced into the three-dimensional space in this paper, and the applicability of these visual perception rules in the three-dimensional space is analyzed through the perception with experience. Then the conclusion is combined with the characteristics of garden space and the location management, architectural structure and material characteristics of the Small Flying Rainbow to analyze the significance of the Small Flying Rainbow to Humble Administrator’s Garden.Second attempts through the theory of psychophysical field and the holism of the gestalt psychology, combined with the social and cultural background of the period of the construction of the bridge, and the characteristics of the surrounding elements including buildings and plants, this paper analyzes the inner feelings of the gardeners reflected by the construction of the Small Flying Rainbow,as well as the relationship between the Small Flying Rainbow and the Humble Administrator’s Garden. Finally, through the summary of the article based on the Gestalt psychology related principles of the construction of the Small Flying Rainbow, explore its adaptability in modern design.
