The old city of Changzhou used to be one of the important cities along the Grand Canal, with a long history and rich heritage. With the development of society,it is difficult to preserve the traditional city forms, which makes it hard for the existing historical relics to form a system and the cultural resources to be revitalized. The Qianhe River used to be the main stream of the Grand Canal in Changzhou, gathering almost all the existing tangible and intangible cultural heritages of the old city in its waterfront area, which is an important key point for improving the quality of waterfront space in Changzhou and refining local historical and cultural characteristics. This thesis studies the environment of waterfront historical area by the Qianhe River in Chang Zhou,on the theory of morphogenesis, based on the historical research, and constructing time and spatial clues. The utilization of GIS is to draw, abstract, superpose, compute and compare city plans. The conclusions of space syntax proofs thel analysis of typology, and emphasizes the effect of waterway in the transportation and public space system. This thesis tries to deduce the best material forms which represent the local characteristics of the Qianhe area, and the internal mechanism which influence its inheritance, evolution and extinction. This thesis respectively studies the core forms and dominant mechanisms at the scale of city, block and area.At each scale, three steps are contained: historical research, analysis, and verification. The city plans are compared between different historical periods, and a database of morphogenesis elements is constructed at the same time.At the city scale, the Qianhe area entered heyday when the canal function was declining and the city river function was rising.Commerce and education became the dominant types of land, but residence still played a decisive role.At the block scale, the material forms related to residence can be classified according to their relationship with commerce and education.Producing and living activities mainly took place in lanes, which were representative public space in the blocks.Particularly, the waterfront commercial and residential districts contained the core lane networks with the most active activities, and became the dominant residential type in Qianhe area.At the area scale, the activity scales and modes of different resident types show that the waterfront junctions were links between city and block scales. The docks and bridges which were amphibious were the core junctions in the Qianhe area. Finally, practical significance of the conclusions obtained in the analysis of three scales is discussed, and the diachronic and synchronic maps are drawn and interpreted respectively.
