Abstract/Summary:
On the basis of the cultural translation theory, using Goldblatt’s English translation of idioms in Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out as the corpus, this study investigates the effective transmission of cultural information in idioms. Results show that:1)the translator adopts a "foreignization first, domestication second" strategy in his translation of idioms, preserving as many Chinese elements as possible and staying true to the source text, which helps to enhance the fluency and the readability of the translated text.2)Due to the lack of accurate understanding of cultural differences,as well as some translations that deviate from the original text, the translator has shortcomings in the transmission of cultural information.Overall, the translator successfully showcased to foreign readers the charms of Chinese idioms. His translation has enhanced fluency and readability, magnifying the portrayal of cultural elements in the novel. However, there are still some flaws in his translation. This paper concludes that translating idioms using a cultural perspective is beneficial to readers’ comprehension of cultural elements in the original text, thereby promoting cultural exchanges.
