Novels written by Lu Hsun mark a new phase in China’s history of fiction.Featuring metaphorical language, his novels are rich in all kinds of metaphors which serve as clues to understand the novels, and "Lu(road)" is one typical example of this kind. This thesis is an attempt to translate the metaphorical meanings of "Lu" and make an analysis of the two English versions rendered by Yang Xianyi&Gladys Yang and William A.Lyell in terms of the Conceptual Blending Theory.Meanwhile,it analyses the meaning construction and reasoning mechanism of online metaphorical processing and probes into the translation strategies used in the rendition of "Lu".In the perspective of cognitive conceptual blending theory, this thesis studies "Lu"within the para-corpora of source text under the four networks—Simple Networks,Mirror Networks,Single-Scope Network and Double-Scope Networks.,and two target translation versions with an aim to explore their corresponding translation strategies. The above mentioned analysis shows that liberal translation is more appropriate for the translation of "Lu" compared with literal translation. It also finds out that in the rendition of a particular metaphor as "Lu",it inevitably bears some cultural imprints which can be detected in the specific translating approaches such as literal translation, simile translation, approaches of transferring metaphorical images and decolorizing the images etc..This study will push forward the further study of metaphorical translation in Lu Hsun’s novels. |
