A Study On The Translation Strategies Of Metaphors In Fox Volant Of The Snowy Mountain From The Perspective Of The Conceptual Blending Theory

Metaphor,as an important way for us to understand the world,contains rich cultural connotations and regional characteristics.The difference between language and literary form brings difficulties to the translation process of metaphor,but the overlapping cognitive experience of the world also brings great possibility to this process.Absorbing the essence of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the Mental Space Theory,Fauconnier put forward the Conceptual Blending Theory in 1998,which expands the one-directional mapping method into a real-time interaction between four mental spaces.Taking the Conceptual Blending Theory as the framework,this thesis gives a case analysis on the translation strategies of the metaphors in Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain.Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain is a long martial arts novel created by Mr.Jin Yong,a famous Chinese martial arts novelist.Aiming at exploring translation strategies of metaphors in martial arts fictions,this thesis selects Olivia Mok's English version as the subjects of analysis.As the first Jin Yong's work that translated into the English world,Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain contains a wealth of metaphorical expressions,which provides a lot of data support for the research of this thesis.In this thesis,156 metaphorical expressions and their corresponding English translations are collected and made into a bilingual appendix.After analyzing the translation process and translation strategies of these examples,the thesis found that the translator mainly prefers the strategy of deleting the metaphorical images,which will harm the connotation and promotion of the original culture.This thesis suggests that the strategy of literal translation should be taken as the preferred strategy in translating the metaphors in martial arts fictions.Finally,this thesis aims to provide some complementary views for the translation studies of martial arts fictions.And hopefully this research will make some modest contributions to the spread of Chinese traditional culture.However,there are also some limitations exist in the aspect of database.It is a pity that the thesis fails to bring all the existing four English translations of Jin Yong's novels to make a comparative analysis.Therefore,the field of metaphor translation of martial arts fictions still needs a more comprehensive exploration.
