| Based upon the analysis of the linguistic and cultural features of wushu terms,this paper points out the problems existing in current wushu terms translation,such as grammatical mistakes,inconsistency of terms translation,word-for-word translation,misunderstanding of the cultural connotations of terms and synonym confusion.In order to tackle such problems,this paper has a more comprehensive and detailed classification of wushu terms compared with previous studies,including terms of basic skills of wushu,terms of quan titles,terms of taolu and terms of wushu weapons,attempting to find out a feasible solution to wushu terms translation.In accordance with the translation theories of spokostheorie and Function plus Loyalty,this paper puts forward that the purpose of wushu terms translation is to convey to the target readers the technical information as well as the profound Chinese culture embodied in wushu terms.For terms of basic skills of wushu,as they are not culturally loaded,they are supposed to be transliterated,literally translated or rendered with these two methods combined.For terms of quan titles,in light of their complexity,this paper subdivides them into six categories.For quan titles related to the place of origin,the originator or the Chinese philosophical thinking,as they are cultural blanks in English,they are suggested to be transliterated;for quan titles simulating the motions of animals or related to the everyday objects,as they have correspondence in English,they can be literally translated;for quan titles including an allusion,the choice of the translation methods depends upon the property of the allusion.For terms of taolu,this paper divides them into taolu terms including images and taolu terms excluding images.As taolu terms are more complicated,any translation method is likely to be used,as the case may be.For terms related to wushu weapons,as they are exclusive to the Chinese culture,it is transliteration that is supposed to be employed. |
