A Research On Wushu Terms Translation From The Perspective Of German Functionalist Approach

China is developing itself and introducing itself to the outside world like other countries under the circumstance of globalization. As one indivisible part of the favorable Chinese culture, Chinese Wushu should also stride its big step to the outside world for the interests of the people all over the world. In this process, Wushu translation should be highlighted because translation is always the carrier of contents in any transmitting actions.From the perspective of German functionalist approach, this thesis is going to conduct a research on Wushu terms translation which is regarded as the first step of Wushu translation. The functionalist theorists have highlighted the functions of the text type, and hold the view that translation is an intentional activity like the other social activities. And the intention of the translation will determine what translation strategy will be adopted (e.g. documentary translation& instrumental translation) to meet the requirement of the translation brief.According to the functionalist theories, the author holds the view that the Wushu terms translation under different purpose will elicit different versions which target to different needs. For example: From the requirement of the external Wushu teaching, the translators should not only consider the target receivers about their receiving ability to Wushu culture but also their curiosity towards Wushu culture. In terms of the professional reference books, the translation should start from a professional perspective to render the terms in order to satisfy the receivers. From the angle of political influence, the terms translated should embody the cultural connotation in order to enhance China's influence in the world. All in all, the author thinks, under the guide the functionalist approach, the Wushu terms translation should reflect orientations of different purposes.Wushu terms are broad in quantity and profound in quality. So the translation of Wushu terms will actually involve various factors. The study of this thesis is only conducted from one aspect of the broad translational theories. Hereby, the author doesn't mean to provide a final solution about Wushu terms translation in his thesis, but only intends to put forward his view from the perspective of functionalist approach and hopes to provide some valuable reference to the future study.
