With the irreversible trend of economic globalization and the strengthening of the opening-up policy, more and more Chinese cosmetics are exported to other countries and regions. The translation quality of Chinese cosmetic instructions is of such great importance, for the instructions play a role of conveying information about products to consumers.Under the guidance of the Skopostheorie and on the basis of comparative studies of Chinese and English cosmetic instructions, the thesis attempts to discuss related translation strategies to promote sales of Chinese cosmetics at abroad and to further the internationalization of domestic brands. The thesis presents a brief introduction to definition and functions of cosmetic instruction, followed by linguistic and cultural comparisons between Chinese and English cosmetic instructions to provide reference for its translation. It is pointed out in Chinese cosmetic instructions colorful diction and short sentences are widely used in combination with its unique cultural images and traditional Chinese medicine to cater to Chinese consumers’ taste. While in English are employed relatively simple diction and complex sentences with elements of culture, such as Roman mythology and western literature. Then the thesis is to analyze the English translation of Chinese cosmetic instructions and summarize its main problems in linguistic, pragmatic and cultural aspects with examples. And the main concern will be a process of applying the Skopostheorie and its three rules to the translation of Chinese cosmetic instructions.Through sufficient illustration, the thesis comes up with three translation strategies,i.e.information-processing for its better conveyance into the target language, restructuring in consideration of the habits of target readers, and rewriting to better serve the functions of the TL text.
