With the rapid development of Chinese economy and China's entry into WTO, more and more commodities and products have come into our market, including cosmetics as an important part. As a special kind of "advertisement" and "bridge" between consumers and companies, cosmetic instructions play a crucial role. Correspondingly, the translation of cosmetic instructions has become a significant and urgent task. A review of translation studies in China has shown that research on the translation of cosmetic instructions is quite limited. Besides, in approaching the translating of cosmetic instructions, the theory applied is inadequate and unsystematic.Skopostheorie is a relatively new model on translational studies, and plays an essential role in the functionalist approach. Skopostheorie releases translation from the shackle of source text, and provides a new perspective to translation, especially the translation of practical texts. The present thesis confines the study on the translation of English-Chinese cosmetic instructions, and analyzes the translating techniques and strategies under the guidance of Skopostheorie, trying to prove that functionalist approach, especially the Skopostheorie, is an appropriate theory in guiding translation of cosmetic instructions. What's more, the author points out that the translation of cosmetic instructions is not only a language decoding process, but also a process that involves many factors, such as target culture, aesthetic psychology and so on. In addition, the thesis aims at enriching the study of the translation of cosmetic instruction, and arousing more attention to and interest in, the study of it in the community of translation studies.
