Abstract/Summary:
With the advent of information age and the in-depth development of Internet, mass media has become the most important channel for people to obtain information and exchange ideas, thus media literacy has been regarded as one of the essential qualities for current generation. After years of exploration and development, the experience accumulated by Western developed countries in terms of theoretical foundation and education practice in media literacy is extremely abundant. However,China’s media literacy education is still in its infancy, which calls on translators to translate as more foreign books related to this field so as to develop China’s media literacy.Pragmatic equivalence in translation follows the principle that translation should reach both linguistic pragmatic equivalence and cultural pragmatic equivalence. In other words,it aims to make sure target readers can fully understand the intentions conveyed by the author.Combining the principle of pragmatic equivalence with the translation of Media Literacy, this paper analyzes and summarizes the potential effects of pragmatic equivalence with the expectation of guiding the translation of informative texts.Chapter 7,as part of the American college textbook, contains numerous proper nouns, media knowledge, historic background, and cultural connotation in context, which calls upon translators to be equipped with rich background knowledge and solid translation foundation. The author gets the conclusion that pragmatic equivalence plays an important role in the translation of Media Literacy, which can ensure the target text to achieve both linguistic and cultural pragmatic equivalence.
