On The Dialect Translation In Turbulence From The Perspective Of Context Adaptation Theory

Fuzao,as the first Shangzhou series novel written by contemporary Shaanxi writer Jia Pingwa,has won wide recognition since its publication.In this novel,Jia Pingwa depicts the local people of Shaanxi in the early stage of reform and opening up with its realistic expression technique and vividly reflects the rich and complex human nature.The authentic Shaanxi dialect in this novel helps to describe the vivid life and customs,shape the characters’ image,reflect the inner mentality and deepen the emotional theme of the novel.The novel is endowed with the vigor and catching power by the use of dialects.However,these dialects which cannot be ignored in the creation of this novel bring a great challenge.By far,Howard Goldblatt is the only one who translated the novel Fuzao into English.This English version not only makes the original author and his work have a reputation around the world,but also expands the influence of Chinese culture towards the world.This thesis takes the English translation of dialects in Turbulence as the object of study and makes a deep analysis on the dialect translation in Turbulence by analyzing and comparing the context adaptation of the source text and the target text in language selection from the perspective of context adaptation theory.And it mainly explores the translation criterion of dialects in the process of translation.Moreover,it also discovers some dialect translation problems and studies how the translator represents the functions of dialects in translation to achieve translation effect.Based on the close reading of the text,the following conclusions are drawn by comparing and analyzing the representation of dialect functions in translation.First of all,the criterion of dialect translation is the adaptation to the mental world,the social world and the discourse world based on the principle of consistency;secondly,in the process of dialect translation in Turbulence,the translator has some dialect translation problems in semantic representation,cultural communication,and textual style reproduction.The reason why the translator has these three kinds of problems in dialect translation is that he does not adapt to the contextual adaptation mode in translation.In the semantic representation of dialects,the translator mainly does not adapt to the mental world in communication.In the aspect of cultural understanding and communication,the translator does not adapt to the social world.In terms of style reproduction of dialects,the translator does not adapt to the discourse world.As a result,these problems increase the difficulty of dialect translation.In addition,it is not conducive for the translator to accurately representing the function of dialects in the novel.Finally,in the process of dialect translation in Turbulence,the translator represents the functions of dialects.The translator understands the source text in the contextual adaptation process and produces the target text which can be understood by the target readers.In this contextual adaptation process,the translator adapts to the mental world,the social world and the discourse world so as to better represent the function of dialect in the novel and achieve effective translation communication.
