Turbulence is a native novel written by Jia Pingwa and there is lots of cultural information of Shaanxi province in it.Not a few scholars compared the English translation of Turbulence with the original one and pointed out the deviations or mistranslation in it.However, most of them thought the deviations were caused by the translator's lack of cultural knowledge and cultural differences.Few of them analyzed the deviations from other perspectives except the cultural factor.Hence, this thesis aims to discuss the cognitive reasons of the deviations in the English version of Turbulence with the help of the four dimensions of Construal Theory.By comparing and analyzing the two versions of Turbulence, this thesis finds out seven types of deviations in its English version: misunderstanding of culture-loaded words, subject switching, change of semantic focus, change of sentence relationships, verb nominalization, change of prominent parts, omission of localizers, reduplication, onomatopoeic words and metaphors.According to Construal Theory, misunderstanding of culture-loaded words can be seen as the deviation of scope and ground.Subject switching, change of semantic focus and sentence relationships, and verb nominalization can be seen as the deviation of perspective.Change of prominent parts can be seen as the deviation of prominence.Omission of localizers, reduplication, onomatopoeic words and metaphors can be seen as the deviation of specificity. The above findings bring a fact that the reasons of deviations should include not only the cultural factor but also the cognitive factor.Meanwhile, deviations can lead to the misunderstanding of target readers and the spread of incorrect Chinese culture. This thesis provides a new perspective of Construal Theory for the translation study of native novels.Besides,it also provides some translation strategies to inspire translators to decrease deviations.Last, this thesis contributes to the spread of Chinese culture, especially the culture of Shaanxi province.
