Chinese humanistic spirit is the spiritual pillar formed in the long history of the Chinese nation, accumulated in social progress and development. Therefore, scholars at home and abroad mainly interpret the integrity, dialectics, subjective initiative and creative thinking emphasized by ancient Chinese theoretical thinking from the perspective of ideological history. As a bridge of cultural communication between China and foreign countries, translation bears the responsibility to introduce the profound philosophy contained in Chinese humanistic spirit. The translator selects Chapter One“Humanization—The Creative Spirit at the Beginning of Civilization”and Chapter Two“Combination of Strength and Weakness—The Dialectical Spirit of Source Exploring”of Chinese Humanistic Spirit as the translation practice.Chapter One introduces the legends and early civilization from the period of Yellow Emperor and Yan Emperor to the Western Zhou dynasty.Chapter Two discusses the dialectical thought embodied in Chinese classics.Generally, the source text belongs to the philosophical text.Under the guidance of Venuti’s theory on Foreignization, the translator carried out the translation practice and interpreted the core concepts by the comparative analysis of their connotation within commentary works in different periods,so as to construct the cultural context of Chinese ideological system and enhance the readers’ appreciation of Chinese ideology. The translation report is divided into five parts. The first chapter is a description of the translation task, including an overview of Chinese Humanistic Spirit and the objective of the translation. The second chapter describes the process of the translation. The preparation before translation includes a general introduction to Zhonghua Renwen Jingshen, parallel texts and the schedule of this translation practice. As for the implementation, the translator illustrates the dealings with philosophical thoughts, the application of translation tools and quality control methods.Besides, the proofreading process and summary of the translation are involved in the post-translation management. The third chapter introduces the development and connotation of Domestication and Foreignization, and analyzes the applicability of foreignization in this translation practice considering the heterogeneity of the source text.In the next chapter case analysis, the translator analyzes the problems and their corresponding solutions from three aspects, namely translation of terms, translation of book titles and translation of philosophical citations. Finally, the translator illustrates the reflection and unsolved problems in the translation practice for further discussion. To sum up,through this translation practice, the translator has realized the importance of“cultural identity”in the translation of Chinese philosophy, and has developed a systematic comprehension of foreignizing translation. In fact, the preservation of the cultural heterogeneity and language heterogeneity in the source text not only prevents it from being assimilated by the target language literature but also saves a place for Chinese philosophical thoughts in the field of world philosophy. |
