The Application Of Domestication And Foreignization In The Translation Of "China And The West To 1600:Empire,philosophy,and The Paradox Of Culture"(Chapter ?)

In this translation practice,the translator selects the 7th chapter of a social science text,China and the West to 1600:Empire,Philosophy,and the Paradox of Culture as the research case.This humanities and social sciences text not only presents a comparative history of Chinese and western civilization before the 17 th century from the perspectives of religion,philosophy and wars,but also shows the rich content on agriculture,construction and politics.The translator gives her opinions about the difference between two cultures and the causes behind it.This report discusses the increasing application of foreignization and domestication in humanities and social sciences texts detailly.In most cases,considering the text's sharp contrast between China and the West,the translator chooses foreignization when she refers to western contents and selects domestication when it comes to Chinese parts.In a few cases,for the diversity and the convenience for readers' reading and comprehension,the translator also uses domestication for some western contents.More techniques such as adding words or changing the parts of speech are applicated,too.The translator endeavors to achieve an organic combination of this strategies in this work.The first part of this paper introduces not only background and significance of the translation,but also the type and theme of the text.Then the second part presents the complete process of the translator's work,including preparation,translation strategies,draft revising and the last forming.The third part expresses the difficulties and settlements in translation process with examples.The final part concludes experiences.
