In the translation of texts of English for Science and Technology, nominalization has been a hard nut to crack for translators. As such, this paper tries to summarize the E-C translation on English for Science and Technology from the perspective of Linguistic Adaptation Theory, with texts from chapter 17 of Special Forces Waterborne Operations as a case.Based on the translation of source text, this paper summarizes the structure and characteristics of nominalization in texts, analyzes the differences between source language and target language, and then classifies the E-C translation strategies of nominalization into Chinese as follows:(1)the adaptation to the context of the source language;(2)the adaptation to the language system;(3)the adaptation to the target readers. For the nominalization which will cause semantic distortion by literal translation, adaptation should be made according to the context of the source text. For nominalization whose sense and language structure are highly consistent in source and target languages, the language structure of the source text should be adapted. For nominalization whose sense and language structure are inconsistent in source and target languages, the language structure of the target text should be adapted. For the nominalization which will cause semantic distortion by literal translation but may be harmful to the reader’s understanding, the target readers should be adapted. In conclusion, the translator should carefully analyze the role of nominalization in the source language and the target language, and select the corresponding translation strategies based on the differences between English and Chinese languages in terms of language structure,so as to adapt to the context and structure of source langue,as well as structure and readers in target language.
