Hirokazu Koreeda’s films are full of attention to daily life and strong humanistic care, paying close attention to everyone’s natural emotions.By facing the tremendous changes of the times with a realistic, sincere, simple and warm attitude to life, and by closely combining the life experience and the background of the times,a huge artistic tension is formed in Hirokazu Koreeda’s film.In terms of content,he penetrates into the family, reflects the fierce social problems from details, and subtly presents the close connection between society and family. His artistic expression is extremely delicate and simple. The meaning of the film is constantly self-generated through the trivial attention to life and the accumulation of fragments of life scenes.Truth and fiction, tenderness and cruelty, beauty and documentary are mixed here and a kind of shock and movement under the calm is created. The spiritual pursuit is expressed as an indifferent, simple and free mental state. The "mono-no-aware","yugen" and"wabi-sabi" of traditional Japanese aesthetics are the aesthetic core under the covering of documentaryism in Hirokazu Koreeda’s film.“Mono-no-aware" pursues the pure aesthetic emotion in creation, which is a deep and pure emotional feeling that achieves unification and integration of subject and object by things and people."Yugen" focuses on the art noumenon and content. The core is "surplus sentiment",which achieves a kind of emotional abundance and spiritual transcendence through slender, hazy, subtle and unspoken ways."Wabi-sabi" is a harmonious aesthetic realm between subject and object. It is a kind of spiritual state of simple and fresh, external emptiness and internal truth,an unity of elegance and common customs.Japanese traditional aesthetics are deeply rooted in the soil of Japanese culture.Cultural backgrounds such as Japanese mythology, history, and geography play an important role in the formation of Japanese aesthetics. In addition, the Japanese are in awe of nature, and their unique natural aesthetics and the moderate, delicate, elegant, concise, and ambiguous personality characteristics accumulated by the Japanese nation in the long-term historical development have affected Japanese traditional aesthetic concepts. At the same time,it also influenced Hirokazu Koreeda, extremely his concept of creation.Hirokazu Koreeda was born in an ordinary family in Tokyo. His keen sense of touch and delicate emotions originate from the times and his family. The nourishment of the predecessor artists and the creation experience of the early documentaries have gradually formed his movie style, which is calmness, objectivity, simplicity, nature, and warmth."Mono-no-aware" is the best description of the emotional state of Hirokazu Koreeda’s film.As the emotions of "sorrow" are diverse,Hirokazu Koreeda’s emotionis extremely rich, which, however,is expressed in an extremely calm state.Hirokazu Koreeda always permeates emotions into the surroundings.Whether it is "natural things" such as the ocean, mountains, flowers and grass,or tram, private car, bicycle, food, house and other living things, they are permeated with an deep and pure emotional state and covey to every viewer indifferently."Yugen" is the most obvious expression of his creative methods and aesthetic characteristics. He uses a daily structure in narrative, and uses emotion as an important narrative clue.At the same time,a lot of open endings are adopted to keep the films’ authenticity and diversity. As for the image style,it has extremely strong documentary characteristics, and is extremely rich and diverse underneath that.A“warm heart” is wrapped in a “cold coat”..But his lens movement is extremely restrained, allowing meaning to be generated in the passage of time. While restraining it,it is not rigid, but flexible and diverse."Wabi-sabi" is the spiritual temperament of Hirokazu Koreeda’s film.Like the triple realm of "sound","color" and "heart" in the meaning of "wabi-sabi",in his film, the realm of "sound" is the supreme pursuit of "sounds means more then silence" when presenting the film characters’ inner world;the realm of "color" is the lively and vigorous life force behind the simple pictures and the realm of “heart” is a kind of freedom and autonomy in spiritual pursuit."Mono-no-aware","yugen" and "wabi-sabi" together constitute the aesthetic core of Hirokazu Koreeda’s film.By connecting society and family, tradition and the present,Hirokazu Koreeda uses his pictures to represent the anxiety of the times, and tells the story of the moment with the power of tradition.
