Meng Jiao,with the courtesy name Dongye,was born in Wukang,Huzhou(now Wukang,Zhejiang).He was born in the Tenth Tianbao year of Tang Xuanzong period(AD 751),and died in Nineth Yuan He year of Tang Xianzong period(AD 814).Meng Jiao is one of the representatives of the ”Han Meng” poetic circle in the Mid-Tang Dynasty.His poetry has distinct personality and creativity,and has a place in the history of Tang poetry and Chinese poetry.The early life experience of Meng Jiao cannot be examined in detail.From the contents of his own poems and sympathy towards him expressed in other contemporary poems,we can tell that Meng had experienced great poverty and depression after grown up.This reality may had caused that many of his poems have key words and feelings of “coldness” and “illness”.Northern Song poet Su Shi used the term "Jiao Han Dao Shou" to comment on the artistic style of poetry of Meng Jiao and Jia Dao,and "Jiao Han" became the final comment on the poetic style of Meng Jiao.Current academic research on Meng Jiao mainly focuses on his poetry creation and poetry theory.The examination and verification of his chronology has also achieved important results,but still has some room for expansion.This chronicle is divided into two volumes with the Xinwei time of Seventh Zhenyuan year(AD 791)as a watershed.In the early period,Meng Jiao studied at Xiawei,his hometown.Then he left his family in the first Jianzhong year of Dezong(AD 780),that is,at the age of 30,and went to Li Fan,the suppressor of Sancheng,Heyang.From the age of thirty to forty-one,Meng Jiao stepped on Heyang,Henan,Changan,Suzhou.In the autumn of the seventh Zhenyuan year(AD 791),when Meng Jiao was 41 years old,he went to Changan to take a test for the scholarship and began a decades-long bumpy life in finding a career.Until the 16 th Zhenyuan year(AD 800),when he was 50 years old,he was selected the county offical of Liyang after evaluations.In the first Yuanhe year of Xianzong(AD 806),Zheng Yuqing,Governor of Xingyuan,appointed Mengjiao as the Millitary Advisor,and let him try Commentary Officer of Dali.Meng left from Luoyang after he received the order.In August,Meng arrived at Country Wen,Henan where he died of illness at the age of 64.This chronicle is based on Hua Chenzhi’s Chronicle of Mengjiao and You Xinxiong’s Chronicle of Mengjiao.At the same time,it also paves the way for the continued research of Mengjiao,and tries to show the literary arena,politics and social condition of Mid-Tang through Mengjiao’s research.This chronicle collects and examines the life,experience and related history about Meng Jiao,and mainly makes efforts in the following aspects: Firstly,we make a collection and basically clarify the life tracks,social interactions and travels of Meng’s whole life,and correct some errors and improve some details;Secondly,we strive to do the textual research of part of poetries of Meng;Thirdly,based on the above research,we try to show and reflect the historical background of Meng Jiao;Finally,we pay attention to the collection and listing of relevant information,expecting to help related studies.
