| With the outbreak of the September 18 th Incident,a group of northeast Chinese literary writers went into exile, and became the Northeast Writers Group well-known in the literary world.Duanmu Hongliang has been widely recognized as a member of this group, but as a left-wing writer,he was rarely discussed in depth and in detail by researchers. In fact, since 1932,Duanmu Hongliang had been a member of the Northern League of Left-wing Writers, and both his novel Mother, which opened the way of literature for him,and his masterpiece Horqin banner grassland, were published in the name of the left-wing literature. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China,Duanmu Hongliang became the first returned Chinese writer joining the Communist Party of China in Beijing. To a considerable extent, the academic tendency of not paying enough attention to Duanmu Hongliang’s left-wing orientation in the past had resulted in the limitations of research about him,and hindered the thorough understanding of his thoughts and works.Consequently, this paper focuses on Duanmu Hongliang’s ideological world as a left-wing writer to explore the changes of his political and cultural identity.Considering the close relationship between Duanmu Hongliang and the history of modern Chinese literature as well as revolution, this paper focuses on Duanmu Hongliang’s literary behaviors in Beijing,Shanghai,Chongqing,Hong Kong,Guilin and so forth from 1932 to 1949.Through combining with the specific historical context and relevant historical records, this paper makes a detailed investigation on the trend of Duanmu Hongliang’s revolutionary road, and presents and analyzes his ambivalence during this process. On this basis, the paper holds that Duanmu Hongliang was originally convinced of the left-wing literature and art line, and his final choice was also attributed to the revolution. It can be said that the revolutionary "centripetal force" had always led him to become a member of the left-wing cultural camp under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. However,Duanmu Hongliang’s unique family background and the resulting personal temperament as well as the tension between his reason and emotion made the evolution of his thought meandering, and trapped him in a dilemma of "being on the edge" in the group of left-wing writers. In the first part, this paper investigates the mental outlook of Duanmu Hongliang(Cao Jingping)as a beginner who participated in the revolution in the northern China before being well known.During this period,Cao Jingping,as a novice, was in the stage of exploring the revolutionary road, and gradually diverted his attempts from politics to literature. The second part mainly discusses the relationship between Duanmu Hongliang and the Northeast Writers Group as well as the left-wing literary circle before the Anti-Japanese War,and the low-class writing is a key point to show the tension between Duanmu Hongliang’s personal temperament and these two groups. Then, the third part of this paper combs Duanmu Hongliang’s spiritual deviousness when alienating from the left political culture during the Anti-Japanese War."Dual humanitarianism",as one of the grounding of Duanmu Hongliang’s thoughts, made his works present diversified facets when he drifted away from the left-wing camp due to interpersonal factors. Finally, the fourth part of this paper concentrates on the development and change of Duanmu Hongliang’s revolutionary belief during the War of Liberation.Having experienced spiritual meander,Duanmu Hongliang eventually sublimated his revolutionary belief, and developed revolutionary discourse while insisting on his revolutionary stand. |
